5-Step Preparation Strategy
- 01
Check Your Exam Notification
Always read the official typing requirement. Speed, language, duration, and pass/fail vs. merit — these differ by exam and even by year.
- 02
Practice at Required Speed + 20%
If your exam needs 35 WPM, train to 42 WPM comfortably. This buffer ensures that exam-day nerves don't push you below the threshold.
- 03
Use Exam-Matching Conditions
Practice with the exact timer (10 or 15 min), passage length, and language setting. TypeExam has dedicated modes for each exam type.
- 04
Focus on Accuracy First
Errors are penalised heavily. SSC calculates net speed = gross speed − (incorrect words × penalty). Shoot for 95%+ accuracy as your minimum.
- 05
Simulate 5 Full Tests Daily
The last 2 weeks before the exam should include 5 full-length simulated tests per day. This builds stamina and consistency under time pressure.
How to Choose the Right Typing Test Format for Your Exam
Different government exam typing tests use different software, fonts, and evaluation methods. Choosing the right practice format from the start saves weeks of wasted preparation.
- SSC CHSL / CGL (Skill Test): Practice on an English full-keyboard layout at 35 WPM for 10 minutes. Use paragraph text on official-level difficulty. The SSC skill test is conducted on NIC exam software — browser-based, similar to TypeExam.
- RRB NTPC (Typing Skill Test): English or Hindi at 30 WPM or 25 WPM (Hindi) for 10 minutes. The test is qualifying — pass/fail, not merit-based. Consistent 32+ WPM with 97% accuracy is the safe target.
- CPCT (Madhya Pradesh): A 15-minute test at 8,000 KDPH (Hindi InScript). The CPCT also tests computer knowledge separately. Unique in requiring Mangal InScript specifically — ensure your keyboard layout setting matches before practice.
- State PSC Steno/LDC typing: Highly variable by state. Some require only 20 WPM; promotions may require 35 WPM. Check your specific state notification annually — requirements change with each recruitment cycle.
